Each state has its own rules and procedures for issuing medical cannabis identification cards. Here in Rhode Island, you must be a legal resident of this state to get a RI Medical Marijuana ID Card However, non-residents can still purchase medical cannabis if they have a valid Medical Cannabis Identification Card or other approved patient documentation issued by another state. Non-residents should check their state rules and regulations for obtaining medical marijuana identification cards where they live.

Have your provider complete the Practitioner Written Certification Form. from the Rhode Island Department of Health.
iTo get a RI Medical Marijuana ID Card, you must complete an Applicaton for Initial Registration as a Medical Marijuana Patient from the Rhode Island Department of Health. You can complete applications and renewals for patients, caregivers and authorized purchases on the Rhode Island Cannabis Licensing Portal
There are no longer fees for applications for a patient, caregiver or authorized purchaser. Any application received on or after Dec. 1, 2022, will be free to process. This applies to both NEW cards and renewals.
It generally takes 5 to 10 days to process an Application for Initial Registration as a Medical Marijuana Patient, according to the Rhode Island Department of Health.
Once approved, you will be given an appointment to have your photo taken for your RI Medical Marijuana ID Card.
NOTE: You will need to present a valid Rhode Island driver’s license or Rhode Island state identification card when you come to this appointment.
